Description
A 2019 photograph of the Archer House built in 1877 by James D. Archer, a year after the attempted bank raid by the James-Younger gang, the Archer House's 50 guest rooms offered first-class accommodations to lodgers. It also provided room and board to St. Olaf and Carleton students under the same roof until the early 1900s.
The rambling redbrick structure on Division Street downtown suffered extensive damage in a November 2020 fire. The building housed a hotel and several popular restaurants as well as a gift shop and a women's boutique. The expected high cost of repairing the structure, make reconstruction of the Archer House impossible. Future site options reportedly include restoration, replacing the building or redevelopment.
